In part 2 we describe how to import embedded and non-embedded AAF and OMF files and how to use Import Session Data to import a multi-part OMF file. Been reading abit about minidv, prosumerdv, professional(somethingdv). In part 1 we take a look at the process of exporting audio in AAF or OMF format from some of the common video editing platforms. I have no current video files and trying to figure out how to create an aaf or omf to stick in a soundtrack session. In short, I'm going to try shooting video, recording audio, and sink and manipulate the two in soundtrack(or upping to a final cut or.). that you can create a omf file, although PT is audio so I don't see what omf does). I can get audio into soundtrack pro (still unclear if I should import them from logic sessions (what file type, I currently dragged audio file in and also imported audio from LP9 session and it worked) or import them from Pro tools (not sure if I would import aiff or wav,for audio, and in reading digi has the dv production pkg. I'd like to purchase the right camera and figure out how to put a video/audio package together of 3 to 5 minute video clips. Along with the Logic studio, which I purchased for the logic pro 9, came soundtrack pro. Protools, Propellerhead, and recently Logic Pro 9. I've been dabbling with music software a couple yrs. Their videos are excellent and you'll be amazed how quickly you can get the gist of the technical side. It's one of the best bargains on the web. I can suggest getting an account at and watching their tutorials. Conversely, STP is better at sound for picture. You can do it, but not as easily as you can in those packages oriented towards music. Note that STP is not intended for music mixing. But you don't have Final Cut or any other video editing software. You can export from Final cut single audio tracks, and import them into all sorts of other audio software. Final cut Pro and STP are designed to work with each other: You "send" a video project from Final Cut to STP, where it opens with all your audio tracks laid out and all your audio edits and adjustments carrying forward from FCP to STP. And you could get Final Cut Express or final cut studio. They way you're setting yourself up is shuffling audio between 3 different programs (you need only one) but you have nothing for the video edit. What you really want is video editing software. Your wav and aiff files are what you want. aaf.Well no, you're not looking for aaf or omf. Since we can’t open audio and video sessions with each other’s software (yet), there’s a couple file formats used to transfer audio between programs: OMF and AAF. When it’s all married back together, the timing should still line up exactly. There’s still changes happening on the video side (adding graphics, visual effects, color correction). OMFs can't translate them, and won't make it. Also, when exporting a pro Tools session to an omf, ONLY use mono tracks, not stereo or 5.1. This means no further timing changes will be made and the project will be turned over to audio. The 1 second audio file at the beginning and the end of the file will have handles depending on the settings you used when exporting, but between the former fade files and the middle audio files, no handles. These choices aren’t final, but their work does act as a guide for the sound team.Īfter rounds of picture editing (and approvals), a final version of the picture will be “locked”. They’re picking what mics to listen to, adding and editing music tracks, and adding temp sound fx and temp voice over. While the project is in editorial, the picture team (picture editor and assistant editors) are doing their own rough mix. Some picture editors leave every mic in their sequence and others choose certain mics (like a line mix), leaving the remaining mics to be sorted through later in the process. The picture editor then edits with that combined media in a video workstation, such as Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut, or Adobe Premiere. Audio and video are then combined so the picture editor can see all camera angles and mics together in sync (and in phase). Audio on the Picture Side – what is the workflow?Īfter a production shoot, video (from each camera) and all of the audio mics (captured to a recorder or the camera) are ingested/imported to a drive or server.
